Chinese PV Industry Expands to the Middle East, Aipu Power Lends Strong Support

Time:2025-11-12 Views:

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has demonstrated a remarkable "infrastructure prowess" in the photovoltaic (PV) field. The completion of the stunning Al-Shuaibah PV Plant, with a capacity of 2.6 GW, stands as a testament to this. This capacity is equivalent to approximately 1.3 times the PV capacity of the Three Gorges Dam project. Teams from China Energy Engineering Corporation, braving desert conditions for hundreds of days and enduring temperatures up to 50°C (122°F), transformed 52.54 square kilometers of barren land into a "blue ocean of PV panels." Once operational, this project reduces carbon dioxide emissions by over 7 million tons annually, substantially lessening the burden on our planet's environment.

Why is Saudi Arabia's PV Development So Rapid?

Abundant Solar Resources:

Rich Sunshine: Most of Saudi Arabia features a tropical desert climate, with an average annual sunshine duration exceeding 3,000 hours and high solar radiation intensity (averaging 2,200 kWh per square meter annually), making it highly suitable for PV development. NASA data confirms the country's solar radiation intensity far surpasses that of many other regions. Figuratively speaking, if Saudi deserts were covered with PV panels, the generated electricity could not only achieve self-sufficiency but also export surplus power. Vast, flat areas like the Rub' al Khali desert provide a natural stage for the solar industry.

Sufficient Land Resources: The country's vast territory and predominantly flat desert terrain offer ample space for large-scale solar panel installation.

Economic Diversification Needs:

Reducing Reliance on Oil & Gas: Domestically, 62% of Saudi Arabia's electricity generation relies on natural gas and 38% on oil. Transitioning to solar power reduces energy costs and frees up oil and gas resources for more profitable export.

Policy Support: The Kingdom plans to source 50% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030. It has already connected 10 GW of renewable projects to the grid, with another 33 GW under construction.

The Relationship Between Power Modules and the PV Industry

Power modules are closely related to PV systems, primarily serving functions like voltage conversion, energy optimization, and system stability control.

Voltage Conversion Function: DC/DC power modules convert the unstable DC output from PV panels into a stable voltage, adapting to different load requirements (e.g., 3.3V, 5V, 12V). This solves the problem of voltage fluctuations caused by varying sunlight intensity.

Energy Optimization Role: Utilizing Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technology, DC/DC modules dynamically adjust the operating point of the PV panels, enhancing energy utilization efficiency. For instance, Buck converters reduce voltage under strong light, while Boost converters increase voltage under weak light conditions.

Application Scenarios:

Off-grid Systems: Powering batteries and AC loads.

Grid-connected Systems: Optimizing the quality of power fed into the grid.

Industrial Equipment: Such as communication base stations, automotive electronics, etc.
